The Skippack Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It was part of a large tract of land, which was granted to William Penn (citations to follow). Lower Providence is part of the historic homeland of the Lenape people, called the Delaware Indians by early European settlers. Lower Providence Township was established in 1805 by the division of the former Providence Township into Upper and Lower Providence along the Perkiomen Creek.
